Shining a light on the incredible role of young carers and the support they deserve
On 16th March, Warwickshire Young Carers will be joining young carers’ organisations across the country to mark Young Carers Action Day 2025—a national awareness event that calls on society to recognise, value, and support the vital role of young carers.
This year's theme continues to highlight the importance of protecting the future of young carers by helping them realise their potential, access opportunities, and live well-balanced lives. You can find out more about the national campaign here:

About Warwickshire Young Carers
Warwickshire Young Carers is an independent, registered charity established in 2003, working to support children and young people aged 6 to 25 who help care for a relative with:
-
A long-term illness
-
A physical or learning disability
-
A mental health condition
-
Substance or alcohol dependency
The relative they support could be a parent, sibling, grandparent, or another close family member.
There are currently over 2,700 young carers registered with Warwickshire Young Carers—yet it’s believed that many more remain unidentified and unsupported.
What Does a Young Carer Do?
Being a young carer often involves a huge level of responsibility, even at a very young age. Their daily tasks may include:
-
Helping someone get out of bed or move around the house
-
Assisting with personal care
-
Administering or organising medication
-
Preparing meals or completing household chores
-
Providing emotional support and companionship
-
Attending or arranging medical appointments
These young carers are often constantly mindful and responsive to the changing health and emotional needs of their family members.
The Impact of Being a Young Carer
While caring for a loved one can bring a sense of pride and closeness, it can also be emotionally and physically challenging—especially for children and teenagers.
Young carers may face:
-
Limited opportunities to socialise or take part in after-school activities
-
Missing out on family holidays or time with friends
-
Increased stress and anxiety
-
Educational disruption, which can affect future opportunities and career aspirations
Their lives are often shaped by a level of responsibility far beyond their years.
How Warwickshire Young Carers Supports Young People
The charity works across the county—in schools, social care services, youth centres and community spaces—to identify and support young carers, offering:
-
1-to-1 support and mentoring
-
Group activities and respite sessions
-
Information, advice, and guidance
-
Support to reduce inappropriate or excessive caring responsibilities
-
Opportunities to have fun, connect with others, and build confidence
At its core, Warwickshire Young Carers exists to promote wellbeing and enable young carers to achieve their full potential, both now and in the future.
Why Young Carers Action Day Matters
Young Carers Action Day is about more than awareness—it’s about action. It’s a chance for:
-
Schools to offer support and flexibility
-
Employers to recognise future young adult carers
-
Communities to become more inclusive
-
Policy-makers to commit to real, lasting change
Because no child or young person should have to sacrifice their wellbeing, education or future just to get the support they need.
