At home, you need a chair that can turn in the hallway and pull up neatly at the kitchen table. Outside, you want it steady over kerbs and uneven paths. The Invacare TDX SP2 does both. It's a mid-wheel drive electric wheelchair (also known as a powerchair) — the drive wheels sit under your seat, so it turns in its own length, with a turning circle of just 1120 mm.

Invacare's SureStep suspension and Stability Lock keep all six wheels on the ground, and the seating can be set up with tilt, recline and seat lift so you're comfortable all day. It carries users up to 180 kg (28 stone).

Worth knowing before you buy

The TDX SP2 weighs 154 kg and doesn't fold, so it isn't for car boots — a folding electric wheelchair would suit that better. Mid-wheel drive is brilliant for turning, but if you want to spend a lot of time on grass, gravel and rough tracks, a rear-wheel drive all-terrain chair is usually the better choice. If you have a narrow home and don't need the higher weight capacity, the TDX SP2 NB is a slimmer option.
