Most electric wheelchairs at this level come in one seat size and you make do. The Rascal Rialto is different. Its seat can be set for width, depth and angle, so it can be fitted around you, which is often what decides whether a chair is comfortable at the end of a long day.

It is a mid-wheel drive electric wheelchair (also known as a powerchair), meaning it turns almost on the spot, so kitchens, hallways and shop aisles are easier to manage. It has also been crash tested, which matters if you plan to travel seated in an adapted vehicle.

Worth knowing before you buy

The Rialto travels at up to 4 mph and is designed for indoors, pavements and smooth paths, not rough fields or steep slopes. Its heaviest part is around 62 kg, so it is not a chair to lift into a car boot. If you need to put your chair in the car yourself, a lightweight folding electric wheelchair is a better fit, and if you are over 21 stone, look at a heavy-duty model.

Can I sit in it while travelling in a vehicle?
It is crash tested to ISO 7176-19 for use in a suitably adapted vehicle with the correct restraints. We can talk you through what is needed.

Can it go up kerbs?
It will climb low kerbs and thresholds up to 5 cm.
