Not everyone wants a scooter that looks like a scooter. If you've ridden motorbikes in the past, or you simply like something with character, the Drive DeVilbiss Sport Rider has chrome mudguards, a big round headlamp and motorbike-style front forks — and it still gives you the easy controls and comfortable seat of a mobility scooter.

It's a three-wheel road scooter with a 1300 W motor and a range of up to 28 miles, or around 31 miles with larger batteries. It carries riders up to 28 stone, and the three-wheel layout lets it turn more tightly than many big road scooters.

Worth knowing before you buy

Three wheels turn more tightly, but they don't feel as planted as four wheels on steep cambers or rough, sloping ground — if stability worries you, a four-wheel road scooter may suit you better. The Sport Rider is 165 cm long, doesn't come apart and won't go in a car. Ground clearance is 10 cm, so take high kerbs at a dropped point. As a Class 3 scooter it must be registered with the DVLA, which is free.
