A manual wheelchair is brilliant for getting around at home, but longer trips, kerbs and gentle hills soon wear out your arms and shoulders. The Empulse F55 from Sunrise Medical gives you powered help when you want it, without giving up the chair you're used to.

It clips onto the front of your wheelchair, turning it into a powered handbike that you steer with handlebars. When you're done, unclip it and you're back to an ordinary manual chair. No permanent changes are made to your wheelchair.

Worth knowing before you buy

Sunrise Medical rate the top speed of 15 km/h for private property only, so check what applies where you plan to ride. The maximum user weight is 110 kg (17 stone). This version has an 8.5" solid tyre, best on paved, urban surfaces; it isn't designed for rough ground. You need good upper-body control to steer with handlebars, though an optional frame stand is available for people with less trunk stability. A clinical assessment and proper fitting are recommended.
