For a lot of people the hardest part of a day out is getting the wheelchair in and out of the car. The Monarch Carbon Flyer takes most of that effort away. Its carbon fibre frame weighs about 11 kg without the battery, it folds by hand, and it's light enough for many carers — or you — to lift into a boot.

Once you're out, a joystick and twin motors do the work, so you can browse the shops, wander round a museum or follow the family on holiday without relying on someone to push.

Worth knowing before you buy

Being this light means some compromises. It takes users up to 16 stone, has no suspension and is rated for gentle slopes of up to 6°, so it isn't right for steep hills, grass or gravel. The seat is 42 cm wide. If you need a higher weight limit, a roomier seat or more range, a heavier-duty folding powerchair is a better choice.
