The Monarch Ezi-Fold Auto takes that job away: one press and the chair folds itself, ready to lift into the boot. A carer can even fold, unfold and steer it by remote, or call it over from where it's parked.

At around 30 kg with its batteries, it's light for a powerchair, and folded it measures just 50 x 63 x 78 cm. It's travel friendly for planes, coaches and cruises, so holidays and days out are back on the table.

Worth knowing before you buy

The Ezi-Fold Auto goes up to 4 mph with a range of around 12 miles, so it's made for pavements, shops and indoors rather than long country routes. Climbing is rated to 10°, so very steep hills may be a struggle. If you want to go further each day or tackle rougher ground, a larger, non-folding powerchair or a mobility scooter will suit you better.
