The Motion Healthcare Photon is a folding electric wheelchair, also known as a powerchair, built around a carbon fibre frame so it is strong without being cumbersome.

It folds down for the car boot, then opens up into a comfortable chair with a roomy seat and gentle rear suspension. You steer with a simple joystick, and a companion can take over with the included Bluetooth attendant controller when you would rather sit back and enjoy the view.

Worth knowing before you buy

The Photon is a travel chair rather than an all-day outdoor machine. Its top speed is 4 mph and its smaller front and rear wheels are happiest on pavements, shop floors and firm paths, not grass, gravel or rough tracks. Even at 17 kg, the frame still needs lifting, so if no one at home can manage that, a car hoist or a chair that splits into lighter pieces may be easier. If you need a tilting seat or more body support, a full-size electric wheelchair is a better match.

Can I take it on a plane?
Motion Healthcare lists the Photon's lithium battery as suitable for air travel. Always check with your airline before you book, as each one has its own rules.

Can someone else drive it for me?
Yes. It comes with a Bluetooth attendant controller, so a companion can steer it from behind.

Can I see one first?
