If you're a larger build, a standard electric wheelchair can feel cramped, bouncy or simply not up to the job. The Rascal Rivco is a heavy-duty electric wheelchair, also known as a powerchair, made to carry users up to 204 kg (32 stone) in comfort, indoors and out.

Its drive wheels sit in the middle, under the seat, so it turns neatly round furniture at home. Outside, full suspension and air-filled drive tyres smooth out the pavement, and big 55Ah batteries give you up to 18.8 miles on a charge — plenty for a full day out.

Worth knowing before you buy

The Rivco is 70 cm wide and 110 cm long, so measure your doorways and hallways first. It's a heavy chair that doesn't fold or dismantle for a car boot, so you'll need a wheelchair-accessible vehicle if you want to take it out. It climbs kerbs up to 5 cm, so higher kerbs need a dropped kerb. If you need a chair for travel, a lighter portable electric wheelchair is a better match.
