A lot of people want an electric wheelchair that copes with the pavement into town but still squeezes round the sofa and through the kitchen door. The Rascal Ryley does both. It's a mid-wheel drive electric wheelchair, also known as a powerchair, with a soft scooter-style captain's seat and full suspension.

At 61 cm wide it slips through most doorways, and with the drive wheels under the seat it turns neatly in tight rooms. Up to 16.3 miles on a charge means you can get to the shops, the café and a friend's house without a second thought.

Worth knowing before you buy

The Ryley doesn't fold or come apart for a car boot, so if you want to take your chair on trips in the car, a portable or folding electric wheelchair will suit you better. It manages kerbs up to 5 cm, so higher kerbs need a dropped kerb. If you're over 21 stone or want a wider seat, look at a heavy-duty model instead. A seat-lift version of the Ryley is also made, if raising the seat would help you reach worktops and cupboards.

Yes, an attendant control can be added so someone walking behind can drive it for you.
