Keep the wheelchair you know, and let a joystick do the hard work
Pushing a manual wheelchair all day takes its toll on shoulders, wrists and energy. Yet you may not want the size and weight of a full electric wheelchair.
The SD MotionDrive from Steering Developments adds two compact motors and a joystick to a wide range of manual wheelchairs with 24" wheels, folding or rigid. You drive with a light touch at home, at work or out and about, and when you want to go back to pushing, you simply switch to manual.
✅ Key Features & Benefits
Joystick control with five speeds
Drive with a gentle hand movement instead of pushing, a huge relief if you live with shoulder pain, arthritis or limited strength.Up to 18 miles with the lithium battery
Enough for a full day of shopping, appointments and visits without worrying about getting home.Twin 120 W motors driving the rear wheels
Steady, direct power that helps on slopes of up to 6 degrees, such as ramps and gentle hills.Quick-release wheels for transport
The flat motors sit in the wheels, and the wheels come off at the press of a button, so the chair still goes in the car.Joystick on the side that suits you
Fit it on the left or right. A retractable arm on frame-mounted joysticks lets you lower it and pull right up to a table.Optional attendant control
A control on the push handles lets a carer take over completely, which helps on longer trips or when you are tired.Choice of battery
A 24 V 6.7 Ah NiMH battery or a lithium-ion battery, both charging automatically in about two to three hours.
Who it suits best
- Manual wheelchair users whose shoulders or wrists need a break
- People who want powered help but prefer to keep their own chair
- Users with a carer who sometimes wants to take control
Worth knowing before you buy
The MotionDrive is designed for chairs with 24" rear wheels, so it won't suit every wheelchair, and fitting is done as a conversion, which usually takes around seven working days. It adds weight to your chair, so think about who will be lifting it. If you only want a bit of help with each push rather than full joystick control, a push-assist add-on may suit you better.

More questions about power add-ons
What is a power add-on?
It's a motor that fits to your manual wheelchair to give you power when you want it. Options include push-assist wheels, rear drive units and front attachments that turn your chair into a power trike.
Power add-on or electric wheelchair: which is better?
A power add-on lets you keep the chair you know and is lighter to take in the car. If you can't push yourself at all or need powered support all day, an electric wheelchair is usually the better choice.
How far will it go on a charge?
Range varies from model to model and depends on hills, your weight and the ground, so check the figure on each product page and ask us about your usual routes.
Can I get VAT relief?
If you have a long-term illness or disability and it's for your own personal use, you may be able to buy qualifying products without paying VAT. Just ask us and we'll help you with the simple declaration.
