For longer rides along country lanes, park paths and town streets, comfort is everything. The Sterling S700 is the flagship of Sterling's S-Series: a road-legal 8 mph scooter with independent suspension on every wheel and large 13" air tyres that roll over bumps rather than bouncing off them.

It carries riders up to 25 stone (160 kg) and goes up to 28 miles on a charge from two 75Ah batteries. The seat swivels for easy transfers and adjusts in several ways, and the controls work with a light touch of your fingers or thumb.

Worth knowing before you buy

The S700 is a large scooter — about 150 cm long and roughly 146 kg with batteries. It needs a garage, shed or scooter store to live in. It isn't meant for a car boot; if you need to take a scooter in the car, look at a folding or boot scooter instead.

Do I need a licence?
No. As a Class 3 scooter it needs free DVLA registration, and many people choose insurance for peace of mind.

Can I try one before I decide?
