An active wheelchair is a lightweight manual wheelchair you push yourself. It's built around your body and your day, so it's easier to push, lift into a car and live with than a standard NHS-style chair.
How much does an active wheelchair cost?
Prices depend on the frame, how much it can be adjusted and how much is made to measure. These are typical private purchase prices:

What makes the price go up?
- Frame: aluminium is strong and good value. Titanium and carbon fibre are lighter and cost more.
- Made to measure: seat width, depth, backrest height and wheel position set to your body, so the chair pushes more easily and supports your posture.
- Folding or rigid: rigid frames are lighter and push better. Folding frames can be easier to fit in some cars.
- Extras: pressure-relieving cushions, side guards, push handles and power assist.
Can I add power assistance?
Yes. A power add-on gives your push a boost, so you can go further and get up slopes without straining your shoulders. Options include wheels with motors built in and small units that clip on behind the chair. They cost about £3,000 to £6,000, depending on the system. Can I get help with the cost?
- NHS Personal Wheelchair Budget: your local wheelchair service may give you a voucher to put towards a chair you choose.
- Access to Work: may fund a chair you need for your job.
- Charities and grants: for example, the Mobility Trust or Turn2us.
- VAT relief: if you have a long-term condition, you may not have to pay VAT. Ask us and we'll explain.
We can write a quote your funder will accept, and hold a chair while your funding comes through.
