Motability Scooters: What Happens If Your Allowance Stops, You Move or It Breaks Down? - Active Mobility Ltd

The Motability Scheme is about as worry-free as it gets. Your scooter or Electric Wheelchair, insurance, breakdown cover, servicing and batteries are all covered. But customers still ask us what happens when life changes. Here are the questions we hear most, with straight answers.

How the payment works

If you get the higher-rate mobility part of PIP or DLA, it's paid straight to Motability. A car usually takes the whole allowance. A scooter or Electric Wheelchair only takes part of it, and the rest is paid to you. See how much a mobility scooter costs on Motability.

What if my allowance stops?

Don't panic. In our experience, Motability always looks after the customer. The exact rules are set by Motability, so check their own website for what applies to you, or call us and we'll point you in the right direction.

What if I move house?

Tell Motability and tell us. You'll still be supplied if you move out of our area, and Motability can switch you to a dealer closer to your new home.

What if it breaks down when I'm out?

Use the Motability breakdown app on your smartphone, or call their breakdown number. They'll arrange a call-out, and if it can't be fixed there, they'll take you and your scooter or wheelchair home.

Like a car breakdown, it can take a while. That's one reason the yearly service matters. Nothing is foolproof, and something can still break a week after a service, but a service catches most problems before they leave you stranded.

What happens at the yearly service?

Our engineers check the whole scooter or chair, including the batteries. We follow Motability's rules, so if the batteries fail the test, Motability covers the cost of replacing them. There's nothing for you to decide or pay.

What if it gets damaged?

Motability can refuse to cover damage from abuse or excessive overuse. Tracy has never known it happen to one of our customers.

What happens after 3 years?

Your scooter or chair is swapped every 3 years. You can hand it back or order a new one.

Is Motability right for you?

For some people buying works out better, and for others Motability does. It's most worthwhile if you use your scooter or chair a lot, for example all day, every day, or for getting to work. Read Motability or buy your own?
