The Kymco Maxi XLS is one of the scooters we hire out at Stratford Shopmobility, so Mike, who runs Shopmobility, has driven it a lot and seen plenty of people use it. It's one of his favourites. Here is his honest review.

"It suits 99% of people. It's comfortable, really easy to use, and when I'm driving it I feel confident. I know it can go wherever I need it to."

What Mike loves
- It carries up to 32 stone. "That makes it a great choice for bariatric users, and it doesn't feel strained."
- The captain's seat. "It's fully adjustable and easy to set up for most people. There's plenty of room in the footwell too."
- The tiller. "The column is easy to adjust, and the delta tiller can be driven one-handed from either side. That really helps if someone has limited use of one arm."
- The ride. "It has full active suspension with shock absorbers and springs. On rougher ground the ride is really comfortable."
- A clever safety touch. "When you switch it back on, it goes to 4 mph, even if you left it on the 8 mph setting. So if you forget to turn the speed down, you don't set off at full speed. That cuts the chance of an accident."
- Road ready. "It has full lights and is road legal, so you can use it on the road or the pavement."
- The colours. It comes in Glossy Black, Graphite Grey and Cherry Red.
What Mike would change
"The tyres are a bit narrower than I'd like. My Ignite has wider ones." Mike explains the trade-off: wider tyres sink less on wet, muddy ground and feel more stable on rough tracks. Narrower tyres are better in towns and on park paths, and they get more miles from a charge. So if you mostly ride in town, the Maxi's tyres are a plus. If you're often on muddy fields, look at the ScooterPac Ignite.
Worth knowing before you buy
At 138 kg with its batteries, the Maxi XLS stays at home and you ride it from your door. It won't go in a car boot. You'll need a garage or dry store with a socket for charging. As a Class 3 scooter it needs a free DVLA registration.
