Mobility Scooter Batteries: How Long They Last, Why They Cut Out and What They Cost

Most mobility scooter and electric wheelchair batteries last 1 to 3 years, depending on how much you use them and how they're charged. If your scooter feels slow, runs out early or cuts out, the batteries are the first thing to check.

Why is my scooter slow or cutting out?

  • Worn batteries: as batteries age they hold less charge. The scooter may start fine, then slow down or stop on hills.
  • Not fully charged: a short top-up isn't enough. Charge overnight after every use.
  • One weak battery: most scooters use two. If one fails, both are affected, so replace them as a pair.
  • Cold weather: batteries give less power in winter, so range drops.
  • A loose plug or fault: a loose connection, tripped fuse or faulty charger can all make a scooter cut out.

How to make your batteries last longer

  1. Charge after every trip, even short ones, and let the charger finish.
  2. Never let the batteries run completely flat.
  3. If you don't use the scooter for a while, charge it at least once a week.
  4. Store the scooter or batteries somewhere dry and above freezing.
  5. Use the charger that came with your scooter.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a charge last?

It depends on the scooter. Boot scooters usually go 6 to 10 miles; road scooters 20 to 30 miles or more.

Can I leave my scooter on charge?

Yes, modern chargers switch off when the batteries are full. Overnight charging is fine.

Do I need to replace both batteries?

Yes. A new battery paired with an old one wears out faster.

Can I fly with my scooter batteries?

Many lithium batteries are airline-approved, but check with your airline before you travel.
