Second-hand vs New Mobility Equipment: What Should You Watch Out For? - Active Mobility Ltd

A second-hand scooter or wheelchair can be great value, as long as it's been checked properly and suits you. New gives you a full choice and a longer warranty. Here's how they compare, and how we rate our pre-owned stock so you know exactly what you're buying.

Side by side

Pre-owned from us New
Price Lower Higher
Warranty 6 months, extendable through Mark Bates At least 1 year, some longer
Checked by our engineers Yes Yes, set up on delivery
Choice What's in stock at the time Full choice of model, size and options
Lifespan Depends on its rating (below) Full lifespan

How we rate our pre-owned stock

Every pre-owned scooter and wheelchair is checked by our engineers and given a rating:

  • Green, as new: hardly used, in excellent condition
  • Amber, good condition: well looked after, with plenty of years left
  • Red, well used: fully working, but with probably a couple of years left, depending on how much you use it

A well-worn scooter is cheaper, but it won't last as many years. The rating helps you weigh up the price against the life left in it.

When second-hand makes sense

If you're just starting out and not sure how much you'll use a scooter, a good pre-owned one is ideal. It's also a sensible choice if you only need it now and then.

For powered wheelchairs, pre-owned can save a lot. A new made-to-measure chair gets expensive once you add features. We can often source a pre-owned prescriptive chair, such as an ex-Motability one, in brilliant condition for roughly £3,000 to £5,000.

When new makes sense

  • You'll use it every day
  • You need a particular size, seat or control
  • You want the longest possible warranty and life

Be careful buying privately

Scooters on Facebook Marketplace or eBay come with no warranty. Many need a new motor and batteries, which can cost more than a good pre-owned scooter from us. One that's stood unused in a garage can look like new but have seized parts. See 7 mobility scooter buying mistakes.

Frequently asked questions

Do your pre-owned scooters have a warranty?

Yes, 6 months, and you can extend it through Mark Bates.

What do the green, amber and red ratings mean?

Green is as new, amber is good with plenty of years left, and red is well used with probably a couple of years left.

How do I know if the battery is good?

Ask us about the batteries on any pre-owned scooter you're looking at. For your own scooter, we can test the batteries at our workshop for £15.
