Motability is a UK scheme that lets you use your mobility allowance to lease a car, mobility scooter or electric wheelchair. Instead of the allowance being paid to you, it goes straight to Motability, and everything is looked after for you. We call it worry-free motoring.
Who can use it?
You can apply if you get one of these, with at least 12 months of the award left:
- Higher rate mobility component of Disability Living Allowance (DLA)
- Enhanced rate mobility component of Personal Independence Payment (PIP)
- War Pensioners' Mobility Supplement (WPMS)
- Armed Forces Independence Payment (AFIP)
How the money works
A car usually takes your whole allowance. A mobility scooter or electric wheelchair only takes part of it, and the rest is still paid to you. See how your allowance pays for it and how much a scooter costs on Motability.

If a scooter is abused or damaged through misuse, Motability can refuse to pay for the repair. We've never known that happen to one of our customers.
What happens after three years?
You hand the scooter back and choose a new one. If you'd rather not, you can leave the scheme or buy your own. Not sure which suits you? Read Motability or buy your own?
If it breaks down
Use the Motability app or phone number. They'll arrange a call-out and can take you and your scooter home. Like a car breakdown, it can take a while, which is why a yearly service matters. We'll also tell you your battery health at each service.
Moving house or your allowance changes
If you move, tell Motability and us. You're still covered, and they can switch you to a dealer near your new home. If your allowance stops, Motability looks after its customers. Check the latest on the Motability website.
