A power add-on clips onto your manual wheelchair and turns it into a powered one when you need it. It's great if you want to go a bit faster, save your shoulders from pushing all the time, or just get from A to B. Our favourites are from Klaxon, made in Austria.
How they work
Only a small clamp stays on your chair. You roll up to the unit, click it on, and you're off. Unclip it and you're back to a normal manual chair. If you're ordering a new active wheelchair and might add one later, tell us, so the frame and wheels are set up for it.
Our picks
Klaxon Klick Light (from £3,250)
The Klick Light is the lightest Klick at 8.8 kg, with a 750 W motor. A good everyday choice for town and travel.
Klaxon Klick Scrambler (from £4,950)
The Scrambler is the all-terrain model, with a wide 14-inch tyre for grass, gravel and country paths.
Klaxon Klick Race and Monster
The Klick Race Standard (from £4,100) is built for speed. The Race Tetra (from £4,700) has controls for people with limited hand function, and the Monster (from £4,400) has a big front wheel for rough ground.
Klaxon Twist R (from £5,000)
The Twist R fits at the back and pushes you along, rather than pulling from the front. Its battery is flight-friendly.
Battery and range
Klaxon batteries come in three sizes. The largest goes about 50 km, the middle one 25 to 30 km and the smallest about 10 km. The smallest is accepted by every airline we know of, so it's the one to choose if you fly.
Buying pre-owned
A pre-owned power add-on can be good value. Go for one that's no more than about three years old.
